I’ve just finished reading “The Dip” by Seth Godin which, while not specifically talking about the writing industry per se, has made me really think about how this concept applies to independent authors and whether they are capable of reaching success or not.
First a quick overview of the book so you know what I’m talking about. Godin describes ‘the dip’ as the place in a person’s life/work where they are not seeing much success and therefore many people give up to early without realising that this is a normal process.
The idea being that at the very start of the project you are enthusiastic and have lots of positive energy but after a while, especially if you are not seeing the levels of success that you imagined, your enthusiasm dips away.
Since most indie authors give up after about two books they’ll always stay in the dip and never get to the other side – where success lies.
He goes to explain that this is a natural curve and used to separate those that are willing to put the work in and those that give up too early.
It can be applied to anything where there is a huge reward at the end – weight loss, career, money etc – but I can see really how well it applies to writing since most give up too early before they see the rewards for their work.
Don’t fight the dip, acknowledge it and then work through it.
So what does this mean for you?
For you (and by that I mean me too) it means that if your dream really is to make a living from writing books then you can’t give up too early. You never know if the next book is going to hit it big. You might only be one or two books away from selling a million copies and you’ll never know if you just give up.
So don’t give up.
Even if you are not making the kind of money that you wanted right now, it’s probably just because you are in ‘the dip’. You’ll need to put the work in and stay the course because there is a very big upside just around the corner.
It might take just one more book – it might take ten or more. But it’s there.
As Dory says: “Just keep swimming, just keep swimming …”
Success is just around the corner.
If you want to check out “The Dip” by Seth Godin it’s available on all major book readers (and hard copy as well). And if you click my link I’ll get a small commission from Amazon to say thank you for referring customers to them – it equates to around 0.45 cents. I’ll try not spend it all at once 😉
