It’s now been two months since I embarked on trying out the methods from Throwaway_Writer from Reddit.
And so far … I’m averaging a whopping $20 a month.
Now to be fair – I haven’t got any collections up … YET. And I’ve only got 8 stories up for sale (4 in each genre). All the stories are priced at 0.99 cents. A far cry from the massive amount of books that he had up when writing the post.
I do have another two stories finished that need to go up (waiting on cover design) and I probably will finish another one later this week (or early next), so I will have enough to put together a bundle very soon.
But I haven’t given up – and in fact I’m even more determined to go forward with the case study.
- My plan to write one short a week hasn’t eventuated. Life, writers block, plot struggles etc have all conspired against me and so it’s more like I’m averaging one story every two weeks. I’m hoping that changes now that I’m getting better at story structure and I’ve blocked off some nights where it’s ‘Mummy’s working time’.
- All the shorts in the [suspense?] genre are now professionally edited. Originally I put the first two stories up unedited, and, well, I didn’t feel good about it. So I’ve now got them fixed and they are MUCH better. It’s cost me around $20 each story which means I’m going to have to sell a hell of a lot more now to break even or make a profit. But it had to be done. I’ll be going back and fixing up the erotic romances soon too.
- I’m getting a good handle on story structure. My plots are better, my characters are better. I’m getting MUCH better at writing these things. I’ve been reading a lot about screenplays and that has helped A LOT with how to tell a good story.
- It’s still fun. So while not profitable (yet) I’ll be pushing ahead.
Once the collection goes up I expect there will be a big change in income since I’ll (probably) be pricing it at $2.99. So readers could buy the seven singles for 0.99 each, or they could buy the collection for $2.99. Think they’ll be tempted? I’m counting on it.
I should have the [action/suspense*] collection up before I do the Month 3 update, so we will be able to see what a difference it makes. (*I have no idea what genre they fall under.)
Until then … happy writing!
